Heavy clay soil is standard in our area. This causes most lawns to live in the top 2 or 3 inches of soil, preventing water and nutrients from reaching deeper into the soil. Our Soil Improvement Program extends the root zone up to 6 inches.
Would you like a better, more organic lawn? Our Lawn Improvement options are all natural and cost effective. Let us show you how you build a better lawn without expensive renovations.
Soil Improvement Example
Here is visual proof that our Granular Compost works! These two photos were taken on the same day on adjacent lawns. The lawn on the left has been on the Soil Improvement program for several years. The one on the right is untreated. At the time of the photos, it had not rained for 5 days.
Treated
Untreated
The average core depth on the left is 2 inches. The average core depth on the untreated lawn is just over 1 inch.
Why is this important?
Clay soil is very poor at managing water. It dries up very quickly and once it does it is very slow to absorb new water. This is why you'll often see water ponding on lawns - the clay is so tight it won't absorb the water and it ends up evaporating.
If we've had a normal winter, the melting snow will slowly fill up the clay soil. But all we need in the early spring is a 4 or 5 day run of 80 degree days to quickly dry up and harden the clay. Clay soil is less than 50% efficient at managing water so once that happens, even a normal amount of rain becomes a shortfall. If our rain comes in quick storms, it is even more of a shortfall since the lawn can hold only a small fraction of the rain.
Our Granular Compost helps by breaking up the heavy clay and extending the root zone by an additional 1-3 inches. This gives the lawn much more capacity to absorb and retain water. Your lawn will stay green longer, recover from drought conditions faster and manage crabgrass better since the lawn will be cooler.
